Keywords by industry: US search demand by market
Keywords by industry are the searches a whole market runs, grouped by need, with the number of people who search for each one every month. This page shows what a market page holds, how much search interest 17 trades show in the US, and one whole market counted.
What a market page shows
Every market page holds the same four views, so a reader can compare one market with another.
- The demand map. What people in the market search for, grouped by need, with US monthly searches for each group.
- Competitor coverage and gaps. Which searches the leading competitors have a page for, and which none of them covers, with the links.
- Wrong-audience searches. The searches that look relevant and bring no buyer, ready to exclude from search ads.
- A site check. One website set against the market: which searches it has a page for and which it lacks.
A market page opens once the market has been counted and a person has checked every row. None is open yet. The first samples are still being checked, and the samples page lists them when they are ready.
Search demand by trade
The table shows two counts for each trade, in US searches a month: one for the trade's lead terms, one for its keyword terms. They are US-wide counts, not any one city's. They are a way into a trade, not the trade's whole demand. A market page counts every group of searches in the market.
| Trade | Lead searches | Keyword searches |
|---|---|---|
| real estate | 2,900 | 110 |
| roofing | 1,000 | 120 |
| insurance | 1,000 | 70 |
| mortgage | 880 | 30 |
| hvac | 720 | 110 |
| construction | 720 | 80 |
| solar | 590 | 20 |
| plumbing | 320 | 160 |
| landscaping | 260 | 80 |
| cleaning | 260 | 10 |
| moving company | 170 | 180 |
| personal injury | 140 | 50 |
| auto repair | 110 | 80 |
| pest control | 110 | 60 |
| electrician | 90 | 100 |
| restaurant | 50 | 190 |
| dental | 20 | 100 |
How to read the table
Read the lead column in bands first. Six trades have 700 or more lead searches a month: real estate, roofing, insurance, mortgage, hvac and construction. Eight have between 100 and 600: solar, plumbing, landscaping, cleaning, moving company, personal injury, auto repair and pest control. Three have under 100: electrician, restaurant and dental.
The two columns do not move together. That is the useful thing to notice.
- Trades with more lead searches. Real estate has 2,900 lead searches a month and 110 keyword searches. Mortgage has 880 and 30. Solar has 590 and 20.
- Trades with more keyword searches. Restaurant has 50 lead searches and 190 keyword searches. Dental has 20 and 100. Moving company has 170 and 180.
- Trades where both are small. A small count does not mean a small market. It means the trade is asked about in other words. A trade's real demand is spread over many needs.
A count says how many searches there were. It does not say who typed them. Do not compare a lead count with a keyword count as if they were the same kind of search, and do not read a bigger number as a better market. Demand also depends on what the searcher wants (search volume explains how to read each number), who already serves it, and how much of it comes from the wrong audience.
A whole market, counted: freight factoring
The table above is a way into a trade. A whole market is bigger than that. In freight factoring, a B2B finance service, one count of the US market covered about 309,080 searches a month, and 272 of its 1,569 searches, about 24,460 a month, looked relevant but came from the wrong audience (the counts are set out under wrong-audience searches to exclude).
What to do with a market's numbers
Use the demand figures to pick where to look, then check three things before you spend.
- Who is asking. A count says how many searches there were, not who typed them. Check what the searcher wants before you count it as demand.
- Who already serves it. Read competitor gap analysis to see which needs the leading competitors cover and which none of them does.
- How big the whole market is. Read market analysis for size, demand and landscape side by side.
If you run a lead business, the right trade is one where lead demand is real and few competitors have answered it. Pay per lead economics explains what a lead is worth.
Here is an example with round numbers, labelled as one. Say you are choosing between two trades from the table, one with 1,000 lead searches a month and one with 260. The bigger count means more people are asking, not that the trade pays more per lead. Check what a lead is worth and who already answers before you choose.
Which view to read first
The four views serve different readers, so start with the one that matches your work.
- Paid search managers start with the wrong-audience searches, because they decide what an account stops paying for.
- SEO agencies start with the competitor gaps, because they decide what a pitch can show.
- Lead businesses start with the demand map, because it shows which needs are asked for most.
- Web designers start with the demand map and the gaps together, because they decide which pages a site needs.
Ask for your market
If your trade is not in the table, email the site or the market you want checked to [email protected], and Querytally sends a free sample within 24 hours of your email. A report has rows grouped by need, a link to the competitor page behind each row, US monthly searches, and the wrong-audience searches to exclude. A person checks every row. If it is not useful, you get a refund.
Lead businesses can read market counts for lead generation for what that buyer gets.
FAQ
Which industries are covered?
No market page is open yet. The table shows lead and keyword searches for 17 trades. Email the market you want counted.
What do the US monthly searches count?
The number of times in a month that people in the US search for the trade's lead terms or keyword terms. They count searches, not buyers.
Does a bigger number mean a better market?
No. A big number can come from the wrong audience, or from a need the leading competitors already cover. Size is only the start of the picture.
Is this my city's number?
No. Every count here is US-wide for a month. A city's number is smaller and has to be counted for that city.
